Proven equipment. Renewed purpose.
The renewable energy industry has a scrap problem. Wind turbines, transformers, switchgear, and substation components—much of it meticulously maintained, some of it never energized—get written off, parted out, or sent to salvage long before the end of its useful life. Each time that happens, good equipment goes to waste, and each time, that is a missed opportunity for the operators, developers, and communities who need these components.
Ascend Renewables exists to close that gap. We source, catalog, and resell legacy renewable energy equipment so it can go back to work, keeping aging fleets running, accelerating repowering projects, and getting owners paid for inventory that would otherwise sit idle.
Who we are
Ascend Renewables has its roots in the Midwest, headquartered in Iowa, with an international reach. Our company was built by people who have spent their careers in the field rather than behind a desk. That practical experience, coupled with our comprehensive data, sets us apart.
Meet Our Team
Kasey Harmeyer, Director of Operations.
Kasey brings more than a decade of experience, including practical experience from his years as a journeyman and lineman. Having climbed the towers, pulled the conductors, and energized lines, he knows what “ready to deploy” actually looks like. His hands-on knowledge helps clients tailor workable solutions and achieve practical goals.
Jeff Carter, Director of Business Development.
Jeff worked in alternative energy since the late 1990s, with the utility-level fiscal and operational perspective to match. He understands how these projects get financed, built, and kept running over a twenty-year horizon.
Why Legacy Equipment
Not every project needs the newest turbine on the market. For many operators managing mature fleets, there are logical challenges in repairing or updating existing equipment with parts the industry now considered obsolete, OEM support windows, and supply chain timelines that keep getting longer. Waiting six quarters for a new transformer isn’t a viable plan.
A circular market for proven components is the pragmatic answer. It happens to be the sustainable one, too: the greenest kilowatt is the one produced by equipment that would otherwise be scrapped. We also take select projects in Central America, where legacy equipment brings power to communities the grid hasn’t reached.
OUR APPROACH
What We Do
We specialize in second-life wind turbines, electrical substation equipment, and related balance-of-plant components that still have useful life and operational value, through three primary channels:
- Sourcing hard-to-find parts. Aging wind fleets across the country run on components the OEMs no longer prioritize. We track down the transformers, gearboxes, blades, controls, and substation gear that keep those assets producing.
- Repowering and transition support. When an owner decides to transition to newer models, the equipment coming down often still has value. We help locate that equipment, recover it, catalog it, and find it a second home, turning what would be a decommissioning cost into a line of revenue.
- Consignment sales. Our online portal connects sellers of idle inventory with buyers across North America. Sellers set the price. We handle the marketing, the matchmaking, and the logistics.
Every asset comes with documented make, model, and performance history, maintained to safe-harbor standards and serviced as if it were still in active duty.
How We Do It
Navigating the world of legacy equipment comes with its own set of advantages and challenges. One of the key benefits s is our access to comprehensive data on the make and model of each piece of equipment, along with its performance history over the past decade. All of this legacy equipment has been meticulously maintained and serviced as if it were new, ensuring it is always ready for deployment.
We prioritize staying up-to-date with regulatory compliance for safe-harbor turbines, substation components, and other legacy parts. Each owner is responsible for keeping their equipment to current standards, which includes regular servicing and maintenance, even if the equipment has never been put into active service.
At Ascend Renewables, we take great pride in our ability to match customers with the right equipment. The renewable energy landscape is evolving rapidly, and technological advancements are occurring at an even faster pace.
Although we specialize in connecting buyers and sellers in North America, we also use our data and resources to energize Central America and South America, where many locations have historically lacked access to power. In these regions, utilizing legacy equipment is an ideal solution, as it meets the needs without necessitating the latest technology.
